Wayne Zakers - CEO

Wayne joined the Group as CEO in June 2016.

A Chemical Engineer by background, he started his career with the chemicals arm of a multi-national oil and gas company. His early career was spent in operations management and engineering, and led to Chartered Engineer status. He worked in financial, commercial and procurement roles, his last role being business manager for a portfolio of solvents businesses.

A desire to develop his career in a different environment and with new challenges led him to move to a premium supplier of construction chemicals. His role grew from General Manager to Vice President level in Sales & Marketing, and in running the international export team, selling into four continents. Before joining David Ball Group Wayne spent four years as VP Europe, including manufacturing operations in Denmark, Spain and the United Kingdom.

When approached about the CEO role at David Ball Group, Wayne was struck by the enthusiasm and passion of the team, as well as the support and long-term commitment of the shareholders. The high service levels offered in the waterproofing business, based around the famous PUDLO brand, stood out and were highly valued by the customer base. The ability to significantly reduce the environmental impacts of the construction industry through the Cemfree technology was an important factor in Wayne’s decision to join the company.

 

Martin Coles - Group Financial Director

 

Martin joined David Ball Group in February 2016 as Head of Finance.

He trained as a Chartered Management Accountant and has worked in numerous sectors. In his early career these included engineering, capital goods distribution, hygiene rental and a government ‘quango’. He gained all round experience in financial management, planning & analysis and costing.

At the age of 34, in a quest to widen his experiences, Martin trained as a secondary school teacher. He taught A level and lectured on professional accountancy courses. He also took up the opportunity to be an author for two educational publishers.

Back in industry, Martin joined ID Data plc as financial controller, a stock exchange listed company, and was subsequently promoted to Finance Director. There were severe profitability and funding issues, but despite this, he had a major role in several business acquisitions. After this he was Finance Director at Sylmar Technology, and together with the MD completed a successful MBO at the height of the financial crisis.

Martin was attracted to DBG because it has the prospect of becoming much bigger – and it looks an enjoyable challenge to contribute towards achieving that goal.

 

Oliver Minett - Group Operations Manager

Oliver began his career with David Ball Group in 1997 as a factory charge-hand. He progressed through a series of roles including Factory Manager, Production Manager, Procurement Director before January 2017, when he became Group Operations Manager.

In this role, Oliver is responsible for the integration of sustainable production and procurement into our company working practices. He oversees the sourcing of equipment and materials as well as international export and importing of products. Furthermore, Oliver is responsible for new product development in conjunction with Technology, Commercial and Finance functions. He oversaw the planning and execution of the company’s transition from offices in Bar Hill to its new site in Bourn – which involved managing stock on both sites – without any disruption.

Oliver has a BA Hons in Management from Anglia Ruskin University. He is also IOSH qualified for managing safety.

Dr Kostas Koutselas - Group Technology Manager

Dr Kostas Koutselas joined David Ball Group Ltd as Group Technology Manager in 2017. With a background in technical research for Aggregate Industries, Unibeton and Fosroc, including international senior roles in Dubai and Qatar, Kostas has joined the DBG team to further develop our existing technologies and broaden our portfolio of innovative products for the future.

Kostas has extensive technical experience in concrete and admixtures, as well as a strong record of delivering innovative concepts and identifying market technical needs within concrete technology. The technical, commercial and development aspects of his role here at DBG create a unique opportunity for Kostas to utilise his know-how and expertise to help create new products for DBG to introduce to the market.

 

 

Professor Peter Hewlett - Director of Research and Development

Peter HewlettA Chartered Chemist by qualification and a Chartered Scientist, Peter has been involved in materials research within the construction industry for 50 years, specialising in concrete, geotechnical materials and advanced adhesives. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree for his work on admixtures and concrete durability at the University of Dundee, where he is also a visiting Industrial Professor in the Division of Civil Engineering.

Peter is regarded as a global figure in construction materials, with several hundred publications and patents to his name. In 2006 he was awarded the U.K. Concrete Society Gold Medal, and in 2000 was given the Polish honour “Officer’s Cross of Merits” for excellence in Science and Technical Cooperation. He is a three times President of the U.K. Concrete Society, and Past President of the European Union of Agrément, the European Organisation for Technical Approvals, the U.K. Research and Development Society and the Cement and Admixtures Association.

Peter joined David Ball Group in 2011 as Director of Research and Development, and is responsible for managing our on-site laboratory, overseeing the improvement of existing products and the development of new ones. He is currently Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Magazine of Concrete Research, President of the Institute of Concrete Technology, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Materials.

Enda Gorman - Cemfree Commercial Manager

Enda has been working for David Ball Group in commercial and technical management roles since 2013. At the beginning of 2018 he switched from his role as PUDLO Commercial Manager to take the reins of the Cemfree side of the business, helping to launch this new low-carbon concrete product for David Ball Group. With several years of international sales experience across different industries and a Master’s degree in Business & Management, Enda remains customer focused and determined to make Cemfree the product of choice for sustainable construction.

Matt Smith - Waterproofing Commercial Manager

Matt Smith joined PUDLO at the end of 2017 as Waterproofing Commercial Manager. He has worked within the structural waterproofing industry for over 6 years within various technical and sales capacities. Working closely with architects, engineers, and contractors, Matt has assisted with the successful waterproofing design and implementation on a wide variety of projects throughout the UK. His industry experience is also backed up by the CSSW Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing qualification awarded by the PCA (Property Care Association), which he achieved in 2014.
